Oxycontin
OxyContin is the brand name for oxycodone, a powerful opioid medication. Perhaps the most infamous of opioid painkillers, OxyContin was heavily marketed to physicians when it was introduced in 1995. Painkiller prescriptions tripled between 1991 and 2011, and OxyContin became one of the most-prescribed drugs in the US.
Unfortunately, it’s thought this ready availability contributed to the ongoing opioid crisis. OxyContin, like all opioid drugs, is addictive and OxyContin abuse devastated communities. Its formula was recently changed to deter abuse, but OxyContin is still a highly addictive prescription medication.
